March 2025 Newsletter – Workplace Food for Thought

Redundancy – do it right or pay the price

Have you been hit hard following the Autumn budget and increases in costs and wages?

Are you needing to make tough decisions about your staffing levels and are considering redundancies?

Please make sure you follow the correct procedure for redundancies or it will cost you even more in the long run.

Mint HR can guide and support you and your team through this tricky period. Email if you need to talk.

Sexual harassment in the workplace

As covered in previous newsletters, it is now your business’ legal responsibility to prevent harassment in your workplace.

Employers have a statutory duty to take ‘reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment’, to improve safeguarding measures and to protect their team.

Are you challenging any ingrained behaviours and putting improved policies and procedures in place?  The first step of the legislation is to educate and raise awareness.

With this in mind, Mint HR are offering clients:

  • A bespoke 60 minute (lunchtime?) workshop for all employees or managers either in person or remotely.
  • A bespoke factsheet to be shared with your team.

Email tracy@mint-hr.com for more information.

What employees want

A recent report on job candidate expectations is an interesting read – especially if you’re hiring or reviewing and bench-marking salaries for the new financial year.

Key findings of the Total Jobs report based on 3,000 UK workers revealed:

  • Employees expect an average pay rise of 4.5%
  • 28% will look for a new job if they don’t receive their desired pay rise
  • 66% would overlook a pay rise to receive their most desired benefit
  • The most desired benefit is flexible working

Everyone needs to feel that they are paid fairly, but also remember that money doesn’t act as the only motivator – its effects are short lived.  Pay rises in the current climate may also be difficult to justify.

Consider other alternatives such as flexible working, more holidays, health care.  Mint HR can assist with pay benchmarking and/or a benefits review to guide you in the right direction.

National Awareness Days

There’s lots of national awareness days and weeks this month, we thought we’d share the best ones with you:

Employee Appreciation Day
Friday 7th March

Though Mint think this should be an all-year-round sentiment, it’s a great reason to make the effort to thank your team for their loyalty, contributions and efforts. Appreciation shown could range from a hand written note or fun awards to a nice lunch or a gift.. As long as it’s something you know they’d like. And if you can individualise it – even better.

International Women’s Day
Saturday 8th March

This year’s IWD campaign theme is ‘Accelerate Action’. At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 (roughly five generations from now!) to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum. Sisters, daughters, mums, friends, colleagues all deserve better, right? Show your support and appreciate to the women in your life, on this day and always!

  • 23% feel enthusiastic about their job daily
